Electromagnetic Flowmeter
The operation of magnetic flowmeters is based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. Magmeters can detect the flow of conductive fluids only. The magnetic flowmeter consists of a non-magnetic pipe lined with an insulating material.
A pair of magnetic coils is situated as shown in Figure 1, and a pair of electrodes penetrates the pipe and its lining. If a conductive fluid flows through a pipe through a magnetic field density generated by the coils, the amount of voltage developed across the electrodes--as predicted by Faraday's law--will be proportional to the velocity of the liquid. Because the magnetic field density and the pipe diameter are fixed values, they can be combined into a calibration factor.
Advantages of using electromagnetic flowmeters include unrestricted pipe cross-section and independence of density and fluid viscosity. Performance is unaffected by changes in process pressure, temperature and fluid conductivity.
A variety of lining materials are available to ensure compatibility with most applications:
Neoprene | Used for applications where a combination of chemical attack and abrasive wear are present |
Natural Rubber | Used for general applications |
Polyurethane | Used for slurry flows that contain abrasive solids |
Ebonite | Used for higher temperature general applications, Ebonite has a maximum temperature limit of 95°C |
PTFE | Used in applications where chemical attack is likely |
